A Brief History of SOCOM:
SOCOM started in early 2004. This was an idea of mine since my first Subaru purchase in 2002; a 1992 Legacy Turbo. I was active on many of the Subaru sites but had always aspired to have a local club.
I thought up a few names for the club including MSC (manitoba subaru club), MSOC (Manitoba subaru owners club), and SOCOM (subaru owners club of manitoba). With the help of fellow Subaru owners, I chose SOCOM as it sounded more “Bad Ass” – according to a fellow Subaru enthusiast.
We started to talk about decals right away, however there was never any action taken to make this happen. Since the club was private, any expenses would have to come out of my pocket, and thus these kinds of things were limited.
In late 2004 the need for a logo, website, and newsletter was apparent. With my paint brush skills I came up a logo which by 2006 it made its way to our banner.
By the end of 2004 we had 24 members, an email address socomanitoba@hotmail.com and we were a registered auto club with MAAC.
The club continued to grow slowly. We hade meetings at Boston Pizza, which continue today, more as a social get together than a formal meeting.
In the summer of 2006 we made our first purchase – a club SOCOM banner which made its debut at SCN 2006.
In early 2007 the pressure of a website grew more apparent and with the help of one of the club members we finally got the website up and running in April of 2007.
We chose the name Prairiescooby.com with plans to help surrounding clubs with another outlet for information and classifieds.
